zhang huan is one of the most well-known and important chinese artists working in the united states
and china. in his first canadian survey, 55 works will be on show, representing the past 15 years of
artistic activity while living in beijing, new york and shanghai. he first emerged onto the art scene
with his controversial performances, which confronted the rules of the chinese authorities. in 1998,
he moved to new york where is performances took on a larger scale, often involving many other
participants. in 2006, he moved back to china choosing to live in shanghai. from this point forward
his work has been more focused on sculpture, installation and painting. his art deals with themes
revolving around chinese heritage and history.
