the museum castle freudenstein is the result of an ancient castle’s transformation in freiberg, germany.  designed by AFF architekten, the castle is thought to date back to the age of the romanesque style.  AFF architekten wanted to maintain the original characteristics of the castle, but incorporate their architectural style into the castle’s new function as a museum.  the exterior of the museum still retains that castle-feel updated with modern elements such as the geometric window forms which protrude out of the castle walls, as well as the colored anthracite which regulates the climate needed to preserve the structure.  using bold punches of color and architectural elements to create patterns on the exterior and interior of the building, AFF has designed a space which retains the history of the building with a contemporary flare.
