‘half awake and half asleep in the water’ is japanese artist asako narahashi’s first solo show in
the united states. based in tokyo, narahashi is an established artist who first began experimenting
with photography in the mid-eighties. she will show her series of colour c-prints that were all taken
in coastal locations in japan. the photographs are created by using a waterproof film camera which
the artist submerges halfway in the water to fill the frame with water below and the shoreline above.

from this vantage point, waves washing against the lens of the camera create unexpected
relationships between water, land and sky. with the water in the extreme foreground, the ocean
dominates the view and distorts the customary perspectives of bridges, airplanes, buildings and
mountains.’
