september 6 – october 4, 2008

photographer joel sternfeld chronicles the weather and atmospheric effects in a field in central
massachusetts in his new series ‘oxbow archive’. through fifteen large scale works, sternfeld tracks
the environmental changes through the seasons. sternfeld departs from stereotypical landscape
photography by avoiding the spectacular and focusing on the average and normal aspects of nature
through the seasons. deeper reading into the works reveals a hint of irony, as sternfeld is perhaps
signaling that the seasons will never be the same due to the effects of global warming.

I went to this exhibition over the weekend. While I "get" the concept, as individual images these are very boring photographs. They only work in the larger context of "the project" . Hard to imagine that someone will pay ,000 for one of these pieces.........

That should read fifty thousand dollars - the price on all of these pieces (edition of 3 as I recall)

I really enjoyed them.

March 30, 2006 The East Meadows, Northhampton is my favorite. The pictures are of outdoor settings that I would not like to be in--too cold, muddy, too wet. It's nice to be able to enjoy the marshiness of the unpleasant landscapes within the confines of the gallery or, if you do choose to have it, in your home. It's like watching a storm when you're safe inside.
