based in vancouver, photographer jeff wall is a well-known internationally. wall’s work is influenced by the
world of cinema and painting and has played a key role in asserting photography’s role in contemporary art.
since the late 1970’s wall has displayed his photographs as transparencies in light boxes. his work takes
place in an urban context and employs performers, most of which are amateurs. since the early 1990’s wall
has experimented with digital technology to create montages of negatives images which appear to be a
single photo. conversely, wall has also embraced using traditional silver gelatine black and white techniques
in much of his work since around 1995. this is the first solo exhibition of jeff wall’s work in vancouver since
1990. it will feature the gallery’s recent acquisitions and previous works by wall.
