german photographer andreas gurksy will be showcasing new works in his upcoming exhibition at
matthew marks gallery in new york. the show will include 5 large-scale photographs, including the
artist’s first self-portrait. 3 of the photos were taken at ‘the cocoon club’ a well-known frankfurt dance
club designed by gursky’s friend sven väth. two of the images showcase the club’s enormous
capacity when filled with club goers. the other two feature the club empty, showcasing its unusual
architecture. it is in one of these images in which we see gursky and his son, in his first self-portrait.
the fifth image was taken in a locker at a düsseldorf mine. the image shows the hanging clothes of
the miners. the image takes on more significance since the german government just announced it
would close the plant in 2010.
