london based artist riitta ikonen was recently commissioned to create an installation piece through
YCN for actionaid’s put your foot down campaign combatting violence against women and helping
to end HIV and AIDS. the installation was created using 200 pairs of old shoes donated to the project.
ikonen transformed the hundreds of shoes into a special installation that was displayed within the
department for international development buildings to coincide with international women's day on
march 8th.

YCN has shared some photos of the installation and a look at the behind the scenes process.
ikonen assembled the shoes into a large grid, painting the majority black. some of the shoes were
then re-imagined using an array of materials and displayed on clear shelves in the final installation.
from feathers and grass, to crayons and nails, the artist used a variety of objects and materials to
transform the old shoes into works of art.
