‘in real life’ is an unusual art exhibition currently being held at brooklyn’s capricious gallery.
the show is comprised of short 4-hour residencies by a collection of independent online art
initiatives including the likes of art fag city, ffffound, i heart photograph and vvork.
the collection of invited guests are each given time to ‘explore how the distribution,
production, analysis, and consumption of culture are rapidly evolving in an online context’.
each group was free to use their time in any way they saw fit. the overall show was designed
to make the labour process of these online parishioners transparent and represent online
identifies ‘in real life’.

one of the completed pieces is the work of i heart photograph. they used their time to create
a performance where they attempted to collect the world’s largest archive of photographs
transmitted via telefacsimile. for four hours anyone was free to send in an image through the
fax machine, which were then catalogued, scanned and added to their blog. as they explained,
‘the fax machine itself will be considered a collaborator in the creative process here,
performing alterations to the photographic content, and essentially reauthouring its visual form.
in the end 24 pieces made it to the site, ranging from photography to text.
