'important artifacts and personal property from the collection of lenore doolan and harold morris' by leanne shapton

canadian artist leanne shapton prefaces her latest project by pointing out, that ‘auction catalogs can
tell you a lot about a person’. this statement rings especially true after seeing the recent auction for
the belongings of yves saint-laurent. shapton exploits this in here new publication ‘important artifacts
and personal property from the collection of lenore doolan and harold morris, including books,
street fashion, and jewelry’. the book is a fictional auction catalog for two imaginary people that aims
to tell their story through this format. through photographs of the couple’s personal effects, the author
attempts to piece together what remains from the couple’s relationship. ‘from first meeting to final
separation, the progress and rituals of intimacy are revealed through the couple's accumulated relics
and memorabilia. and a love story, in all its tenderness and struggle, emerges from the evidence that
has been left behind, laid out for us to appraise and appreciate.’
