american painter sarah mckenzie is fascinated with suburban sprawl. she painted aerial views of the suburbs
until 2005, switching to zoomed in perspectives. her paintings show the homes being built, which mckenzie
compares to the activity of painting. while she is trying to capture a three-dimensional reality, mckenzie uses
the sameness of suburban architecture to ‘explore the basic structures and issues of geometric abstraction’.
she mixes painting technique and styles, often leaving whole segments of a work unfinished. she explains
that this approach ‘enables the viewer to see the picture with fresh eyes—to see the picture itself as
a construction’.
