ara peterson is an american artist based in providence rhode island. while peterson studied film and
animation, the majority of her work is 3-dimensional and static. however she brings her experience
with movement and time-based mediums to her art in other ways, making static pieces appear to move.
optical illusions and repetition play key roles in transforming paintings and sculptures into more
dynamic pieces. her recent work uses pieces of laser cut wood assembled together in series. each piece
of wood in these pieces is changed slightly in form or position, allowing the pieces to morph as the
move from end to end.
