david zwirner gallery in new york is currently presenting the first american gallery exhibition by
adel abdessemed in all three of its main gallery spaces. the show features recent sculptures, videos,
photographs and drawings by the algerian artist. the massive sculpture, ‘telle mère tel fils’ is the
largest work, measuring over sixty-five feet long. the sculpture consists of three airplanes braided
together into a tangled knot. the sculpture is made using original cockpits and tailfins, with fuselages
made from air-filled felt. abdessemed moved to new york in 2008 and this show demonstrates the
degree to which he has integrated the city into his work. the show takes it name from rio, meaning
river and the artist’s daughter’s name.
