in march designboom previewed the in situ set designs by daniel arsham for the for merce cunningham
dance company. the final performance has held on march 31st at l'espace michel simon, noisy-le-grand
in paris. the sets were displayed on a mostly black stage that was dramatically lit to showcases the artist’s
design. the backdrop created by arsham featured a series of three back-lit holes that evolved throughout
the performance, with crumbling pieces falling to the stage. as the pieces dropped, the holes in the
backdrop grew in luminosity, shining on the performers dressed in black and grey. this is arsham’s
second collaboration with the dance company, after his 2007 design for eyespace during the merce in
miami celebration. he also follows in the footsteps of robert rauschenberg who was cunningham’s
artistic director from 1954-1964.
