gelitin: mona lisa variations

the austrian art collective gelitin created these variations on da vinci’s the mona lisa using a variety of
mediums. comprised of artists wolfgang gantner, ali janka, florian reither and tobias urban, gelitin has been
exhibiting their work internationally since 1993. this 2007-2008 series of works pays homage to one of the
world’s most famous paintings with a number of collages. all these works are based on the mona lisa, but
abstract the subject to a point close to unrecognizable. the collection demonstrates the degree to which the
famous painting has become a cultural icon.
