phoebe washburn: wood walls

‘wood wall’ by phoebe washburn

american artist phoebe washburn transformed her sculpture work into a series of wallpaper designs for
wallpaper lab. the two designs ‘wood wall’ and ‘wood wall as safari vest’ both recall washburn’s found
object assemblage art installations. ‘wood wall’ displays a collage of various wood scraps, assembled
together in a hodgepodge. ‘wood wall as safari vest’ builds upon the first adding a series of found objects
arranged in a very organized fashion on the pattern. both wallpapers give the illusion of depth and a unique
character not normally seen in wallpaper. washburn explains, ‘over the years I have collected things thrown
out on the streets and into dumpsters on garbage night. in doing this, I have tapped into larger omnipresent
and persistent systems driven by industry and consumerism. I have come to realize that the moment I dip
into these systems is the very moment that I see clearly an intersection between the ‘art’ and ‘real’ world.’
