australian artist victoria reichelt paints portraits of people as represented by a painting of
their book collection. reichelt has been painting still lives for many years. she developed the
book shelf portrait series from her interest in books and other inanimate objects. however the
series transforms the books in the paintings from static objects into representational symbols,
shedding lighting on their owner. each work depicts a single shelf or series of shelves and is
painted in near realism, giving the illusion of a photograph. the collection of books in each
piece, how they are arranged and the various other objects on the bookshelves gives us
a revealing peek into an individual_s life (including the artist her self, in her self-portrait).
reichelt is based in melbourne, where she is represented by dianne tanzer gallery.
