damien poulain ‘totem 49’ at: kemistry gallery, london from: 5 june – 18 july 2009

french graphic designer and art director damien poulain will present forty-nine hand-painted totems made from reclaimed wood at the kemistry gallery london in the exhibition ‘totem 49’ which opens this coming friday. inspired by ancestral sculptures and religious fetishes each of the pieces explores politics, design, fashion and society.

‘my totems attempt to make solid, timeless objects from fleeting events of the 21st century, allowing for reflection on the colossal power of the image and the role of new tribes and mythology in our increasingly secular society.’ DP

damien poulain lives and works in east london where he founded his practice in 2003. he specializes in print-based projects including books, small-run publications, record sleeves, posters and other communication imagery for art galleries, fashion designers and music labels.
