artist lee gainer draws attention to socially accepted representations in weekly advertisements in her new
series ‘unhidden’. the series consists of newsprint flyers and advertisements that have been painted with
ink to isolate one particular element. gainer points out that these advertisements 'contain multiple examples
of representations of socially accepted behavior, appearance, and lifestyle'. by highlighting one particular
element, the viewer can personally evaluate the messages being communicated. because our image
saturated media landscape is so noisy, these subtle symbols typically go unnoticed. gainer's series allows
the viewer cut through the noise, revealing the underlying ideologies inherent in advertising.
