timothy horn: villa medusa

installation view hosfelt gallery, new york, 2006
artist timothy horn recreated jellyfish engravings by 19th-century zoologist ernst haekel using transparent
silicone rubber. the 3 chandelier-like pieces were first exhibited at the hosfelt gallery in new work.
the engravings bared a resemblance to organic chandeliers, giving rise to their unique form. each jellyfish
was sculpted in clay and then transferred into a series of 2-part molds. in total the jellyfish consist of 800
individual pieces molded in polyurethane rubber. horn connected the pieces and lit them from within to
give them their serene glow. the largest piece ‘medusa’ measures nine feet in diameter, while the other two
jellyfish ‘stheno’ and ‘euryale’ are narrower.
