‘venus of urbino after titian’ by kristyna milde, 2008 (digital photograph)
czech artist kristyna milde poses barbies in the role of historical icons from famous works of art to examine
how modes of representation distort our perception of women. the series cUMENI combines two seemingly
different depictions of women: the history of european painting and modern pop culture. milde explains
'using the historical painting as a stage, with woman represented by the the modern barbie, I want to show
the similarities between stereotypical representation in the past and the present time.' each work features
a near perfect recreation of some of art history's most well known paintings, only the female subjects have
been replaced with barbie dolls.
