artist brian dettmer has given designboom an exclusive look inside his atlanta studio, where he creates his
unique book dissections and other artworks. we have previously featured dettmer’s book dissections and
molded cassette tape sculptures. here you can see dettmer’s studio and some of his projects before they
were complete. he begins to create these dissected books by sealing their edges and slowly carving out
his creations. using surgical tools he reveals certain elements and hides others. 'the completed pieces
expose new relationships of a book's internal elements exactly where they have been since their original
conception.' this behind the scenes look reveals the intricate ways dettmer slowly sculpts these books into
his final sculptures.
