fred lebain: a spring in new york
fred lebain: a spring in new york

fred lebain is not scared of the mundane or clichés.
instead, he plays with them, superimposing their images on one another. last spring lebain
took images of various areas in new york city, each one of them an occasion of a 'first visit'
to the location, in which he photographed and then printed in large poster format. later,
he returned to the same spots for a second visit, capturing a larger framed shot in which
he aligned the poster documenting his first visit to the current scene.
these postcard images show lebain's preference for particular areas of the city,
telescoping his views - a time parallax representing the days which separate the two shots -
and superimposing his vision of new york. hands, feet or a pair of jeans can be seen...
like surrealistic winks, indicating that the photographer is not alone in his mission.

BRILLIANT! this is what photography is all about! skinny models in cheesy clothing has killed the medium! BRING BACK THE ARTISTIC EXPRESSIONS LIKE FRED HAS DONE!
BRAVO :)

s3xt0y 11.05.09
I'm scratching my head...nice idea, but...
Jack 11.05.09
yeah its interesting, but why wouldn't he introduce something more than just another flat photo of the same wall etc?
grant 11.05.09
The images are nice, the effect interesting, the process fun. But the write-up/explanation is total bollocks. Cliché? time parallax? We're talking city views taken a few days apart. Cities move much slower than that.
Way more interesting are historical parallax superimpositions you can see on flickr (by people not trying to become famous artists ;)

No fine artists or art historians here? Magritte executed this concept, at least visually, about 70-80 years ago with no camera and no photoshop (just talent, oil paint and vision).

Oh let us all flex guns of art history knowledge instead of appreciating a well executed vision. It is Beautiful.
savoury 11.05.09
B. how exactly is this brilliant? Hes taken a photo and used it as a camouflage of sorts. Kinda cool effect, but not particularly "brilliant".

Love it! pictures look like paintings!

that is the problem with art and design today, curators are flexing their literary prowess to just to escalate the mundane product to something more. What is wrong of just stating what the product is and how he did?How about letting us lay people dissect the content if we have to. over educated art and design is eventually going to fail and I cant wait for that day.
