brendan lee satish tang: manga ormolu

‘manga ormolu ver. 3.0-a’ by brendan lee satish tang, 2007

born to trinidadian parents in ireland, brendan lee satish tang is a ceramic artist who now resides in
kamploops, british columbia, canada. his series ‘manga ormolu’ is a commentary on globalization
examined through the relationship between traditional chinese ming dynasty vessels and techno-pop art
of japan. tang casts traditional vessels and adorns them with prosthetics inspired by japanese anime and
manga, subverting the elitism of the vessels ‘with the accessibility of popular culture.’ the concept of
adapting the ming vessels is designed to recall 18th century french gilded ormolu, which borrowed
chinese vessel forms to act as curiosity pieces for aristocrats.

Wow This is awesome...

Answering to this question BUT WHY MOST OF CHINESE IN BC LIKE JAPANESE CULTURE SO MUCH? I WAS JUST WONDERING WHY?

Because Japanese took a lot of Chinese culture in past...language, tea, chopsticks....
hihi   11.26.09
WOW, this guy spends way too much time on making his bongs. xD
HigherThanYouAre   11.26.09
awsome!

I don't get it...this is accessiblity to modern pop culture? Sorry, not the iggy pop culture. I gather this guy is one of those educated artists that way over thought the bong, rendering it as a non-functional bookshelf ornament. A lot of work here, too bad I missed the point.

He did a presentation at my college about this work - it's about the old and the new - taking traditional chinese forms and decoration that are a clear reference to ceramics and then squeezing and manipulating them with the new forms and aesthetics. There is the idea of transforming/transformation.. and the technical skills involved in these is unbelievable.. to get the clay to look like it's rolling and buckling.. not to mention the control he has over glaze...
It's excellent work.

The fact is MOST OF JAPANESE IN BC LEARNED FROM CHINESE CULTURE :)

Nice work, very japanese style
hans   11.30.09
-_- because Japanese were from China. Thus Japanese culture is from Chinese culture. (SEOULISH) Chinese culture is more than 5000 years. What ever made you think they need to copy from another country that much. BTW, i'm chinese, but not from China, before you start any of those, you are from China talk.
pi2pi   12.08.09
I think there is not connection or transition between the traditional and the modern parts, so it really looks disjointed.
R. Wag   12.08.09
not a fan of the robotic stuff, but i seriously envy your innovation and skill. i make art too.

Sexy... The future consumes tradition greedily... How different the past aesthetic was from the present... And how beautiful and sensual these objects become...!
Mieko   12.08.09
v. interesting, but i'd like to see more integration. a lot of the "manga" stuff feels tacked on. though I do like the way the one peice kind of crumples and melts into the other section.
rebecca   12.09.09
pizdec!
kinoid   12.16.09
wow he has taken ceramics to the next level!!! Looks like an ancestor of the transformers or something like that. I love it!
