‘manga ormolu ver. 3.0-a’ by brendan lee satish tang, 2007

born to trinidadian parents in ireland, brendan lee satish tang is a ceramic artist who now resides in
kamploops, british columbia, canada. his series ‘manga ormolu’ is a commentary on globalization
examined through the relationship between traditional chinese ming dynasty vessels and techno-pop art
of japan. tang casts traditional vessels and adorns them with prosthetics inspired by japanese anime and
manga, subverting the elitism of the vessels ‘with the accessibility of popular culture.’ the concept of
adapting the ming vessels is designed to recall 18th century french gilded ormolu, which borrowed
chinese vessel forms to act as curiosity pieces for aristocrats.

I don't get it...this is accessiblity to modern pop culture? Sorry, not the iggy pop culture. I gather this guy is one of those educated artists that way over thought the bong, rendering it as a non-functional bookshelf ornament. A lot of work here, too bad I missed the point.

He did a presentation at my college about this work - it's about the old and the new - taking traditional chinese forms and decoration that are a clear reference to ceramics and then squeezing and manipulating them with the new forms and aesthetics. There is the idea of transforming/transformation.. and the technical skills involved in these is unbelievable.. to get the clay to look like it's rolling and buckling.. not to mention the control he has over glaze...
It's excellent work.
