banksy in graffiti war with fellow street artist robbo

banksy's latest handiwork has him on the street.
the notorious street artist from bristol has gotten himself into a graffiti war, after painting
over a 24-year-old mural done by fellow street artist robbo, in 1985. the artwork,
located beneath a bridge over regent's canal, had remained untouched until now.

banksy's painting of a workman in overalls pasting graffiti covered wall paper on
a grey wall, defaces robbo's original mural. a few days later, on christmas, robbo retaliated
by spraying over banksy's painting of the workman with 3 ft high silver letters spelling out
'king robbo'.

the happening has sparked a war of words on flickr, where robbo and fellow artists from
around britain have expressed a disgust for banksy's act of disrespect.

I understand the whole graffiti artist/respect thing - but 25 years?? Kind of ironic that someone would be so precious about something that is inherently temporary - isn't graffiti all about dynamism and flexibility? Things have got to move forward right?
Mr Smith   12.30.09
Obviously, 'King' Robbo has lost some of his artistic flair over the years. I don't see that one lasting another 25.

Next.
Mushi   12.30.09
Yeah, I don't see a notable stylistic developement over the last 25 yrs. Against Banksy rich social commentary, the typical pomp of Robbo's work seems quite flat.

boring/Banksy is corprate.

Not necessarily Robbo is it

Graffiti writers like Robbo dont really rate banksy anyway. He's a stencil artists. He does his cutting out at home safe and sound whereas a graffiti artist does his art in the street where he could get busted any moment. The development of creating a new language through the manipulation of the alphabet is at the core of real graffiti. Banksy just cashed in...and who wouldn't...Idiot has dissed the sub culture that made it possible for him to become famous in the first place..so he must be destroyed...about time.

good to see banksy has invested wisely in his press photography budget... always the rebel, eh?

A proper set-up... how long until he comes back to add the extra 'fuc'?
herc   12.31.09
Yes he's doing his stencilling at home, but it's a new artform.. I couldn't see any other graffiti artists doing the aesthetically pleasing work Banksy does.. plus it has meaning and irony. It's freakin' hysterical actually I think he's genius. Everyone else just signs their name... I could do that!
capt.B   12.31.09
KING BANKSY!

Go Banksey what next! cant stop now.
julie   12.31.09
Big up Banksy!!

people like him are doing the true graffiti if you ask me.. what's the use of puttin your name up in ugly silver letters a thousand times (don't get me wrong.. i love making letter) but that robbo piece looks like shit
What's da fuss   12.31.09
Banksy has just got to learn you cant be a real bombin' vandal and a celeberity at the same time. He is really beginning to piss me off lately with his little books. He is not a 'Graffiti writer' just another arthuritus bitten paper painter who likes their work on walls. HE IS NOT THE BEST GRAFFITI ARTIST EVER.
THE OAPS NEED TO KNOW THAT JUSTB ECAUSE OF THE MEDIA , HE IS NOT THE BEST GRAFFITI ARTIST , AND IS NOT LOOKED UP TO S MUCH AS GRAFFITIWRITERS. HE AINT NO WRITER. FULLSTOP.

if I was Robbo I would take this as a huge compliment. I think Banksy is highlighting Robbo. This is the kind of collabaration a young graf artist should be well chuffed to be assotiated with. the fact we are discussing him should be enough for him to appreciate this great honour. Dont be so bloody ungrateful!!!
worldofemma   01.01.10
alot of people are living in the past to the old grafitti standards, keep up and get with the times. if you can create a book of your art, to provide an income, why not! and the comment about banksy being a celeb... isn't every graffiti artist who signs their work trying to achieve this sort of reconition?
