‘football, the most popular sport in the world, brings together an incalculable number of fervent fans and occasional spectators. this popularity, accentuated by major media coverage, increased further in europe with the victory of france and the “black-blanc-beur” during the 98 world cup. this same victory also succeeded in reconciling the strata of the population around the round ball: while the preceding decades, primarily in french-speaking countries, had been marked by a certain intellectual ‘anti- football’ culture, today this sport benefits from the attention of all levels of society.’
