julia chiang: ring pop art
julia chiang: ring pop art

brooklyn based artist julia chiang uses a wide variety of materials in her sculpture and installation based
work, including nostalgic and sweet ring pops. the colourfoul candy has been used by chiang in a number
of works often employed as pixels spelling out words. the candy jewels atop the rings melts over time
under gallery lights and slowly drips down the walls. the melted sugar stains the surfaces it touches.
one of chiang's largest ring pop installation was presented at this year's art basel miami in the group
show 'it ain't fair' at ohwow gallery and can be seen in these photos.

original? Similar thing in "Across the Universe" with strawberries. Most likely done by someone else before that.

Her creativity and technical skills are astounding.

one was a "neat" idea, an entire series, thats pretty weak. creativity, astounding? hardly... all of the pieces are exactly the same, just different words, how is that creative?

Okay, it looks nice, but really it's such a waste. Just think of how many kids you could make happy with that many Ring Pops! Instead those ring pops are just making a few adults slightly amused, which is nothing when compared to making lots of kids really happy.

the first think i thought was across the universe, but not nearly as cool. while its cute and colorful, it looks more like a childs bedroom than an art installation.
