joy charbonneau & ed zec: great lakes

designers joy charbonneau and ed zec have used scientific measurements of north america’s great lakes to
create this series of cast metal sculptures. the series is made from both bronze and aluminium, recreating
the depths of the famous lakes to scale. the data for the project is based on bathymetric information from
the national oceanic and atmospheric administration (NOAA)  and represents the five lakes
volumetrically. the designers explain their fascination with these large bodies of water, ‘we are engaged
with the larger social, political and environmental economy emerging from the great lakes and are
equally fascinated by the intricate specificities of them as an object.’

I'm going to be picky here, but these aren't to exactly scale, this is an exaggerated scale, the lakes are much shallower than this, but that would make for a less interesting sculpture.

I do like them though.

thanks, but you needn't have bothered

I love the intricacy and remarkable patterns that emerge when the underside of the lakes are revealed. Makes one appreciate more the beauty of these massive natural resources.

Nice... clever AND sexy -- well done!

We have one of the limited aluminum silver versions, SO BEAUTIFUL in real life even more than in the picture, and such a fun table-top game!

Cheers and keep up the good work! [now my love wants the lake Loch Ness — do they take special requests!!?]
