mark pernice + christian hanson: photo booth mask
mark pernice + christian hanson: photo booth mask

for a self promotional project, designer mark pernice worked with sculptor christian hanson
to produce this mask - based on a photo of pernice's face, which was distorted
in apple's photo booth program.

'using apple's photo booth application as inspiration, the idea was to take the 2D image that
it manipulated and create a tangible face in a real environment, then in turn bring it back into a 2D image.
using photo booth on the mask itself may create some sort of paradoxal shift where i cease to exist.' MP

Um, that's pretty terrifying.
I read the description, but tell me WHY again?

Adam 04.25.10
To answer Adam. Since this post refers to Mark Pierce as a "designer" you were probably mistaken into thinking he is a product designer. I browsed his website and I would rather say he is an artist... at this point there's no WHY needed. It's just art, it has no function but being art.
(And I like it)

Randy 04.25.10
horrendous.
pedro 04.26.10
Why is it 'horrendous' Pedro, do tell.
Pete 04.26.10
Cheap adaptation of Ron Mueck.
jim 04.26.10
cool idea though

Ok, since this was sent twice to my email, in two different Designboom newsletters, Iīm sure you want us to coment, I wasnīt going to coment, but then again, was a bit "meh" about this...
But since it came back, ok, hereīs my coment:
Frankly, calling "designer" to a guy that does a mask of a deformed picture seems rather boring and cheap.
Also, a self-promotional project... Hum ok, I guess itīs a personal choice, which is ok with me, but please, do call yourself an artist, not a designer, design is so much more then a mask coming from a deformed picture, really.
Seems like everybody wants to be called a designer these days, before, being a fashion stylist, or an arquitect, was so fashionable, now everybody is either a designer, or a fashion designer, or a building designer, food designer, garbish designer or even a designer designer, this text kinda confirms it...
To me this project, if itīs made by a designer, itīs pretty horrendous and I see nothing that justifies it, pretty much reminds me of some projects I saw in my university years, they were different, but they didnīt called much attention, i guess instead of signing as a student, they shloudīve signed as... "designer".
Donīt get me wrong, itīs ok to do any kinda of project, hell, I do them too! But donīt call yourself a designer, please.
Thanks.

Fudgey, being a designer or an artist or a wine taster, to me itīs not the education and/or the title he gain by it, itīs what he does, and to me this guy is not a designer, he is pretty much an artist, just like a sculpture and a painter, he does one time items that have not direct use or inovation to society except the one that our brain chooses to.
To me something that is a "design", must have a proper function and/or an inovation, and most of what i saw on heīs site have none of these two.
One thing is for sure, he nailed the objective, it was a self-promotional project, which the objective is to make us talk about him, which we are, and good or bad, itīs publicity...

Discussing who the hell do you think he is?
Does everything need to be profound?
It's funny.

The, stop Your bla bla bla. You take it too seriously. According to ancient greeks' understanding of art You shouldnt discuss artwork, You shouldnt even enjoy it. Just accept it by Your eyes and shut up at last.
again Natik 04.26.10
Design must be functional or innovative? And design that is not is 'art'? Those are extremely trite and narrow definitions of very broad terms and disciplines.
RubberNecking 04.26.10
Bah! Thanks for the Pop-Critique 'The' but to me you seem a little self-aggrandizing in your posts. Show us some work if you can do better.
Prince 04.26.10
haaaahhh thats sweet

A designer is someone who designs things for a living. All artists are designers, but not all designers are artists.
This man is most definitely a designer and an artist.
Also, The, you say artists create things "...that have not direct use or inovation to society except the one that our brain chooses to."
It would seem to me then, that it is the fault of the individual in possession of said brain that any piece of artwork lacks use or innovation.
Just because one cannot see the innovation does not mean it's not there.
And to be completely honest The, you sound like someone who thinks they know a lot about art, but doesn't know very much at all.

Also, I like this a lot. The most important (imo) aspect of being a designer is thinking of yourself as a brand, and building your identity in order to get where you want to go. This most definitely does this.
If prints of these photos were sent to agencies with a nicely designed, humorous body copy about himself on the reverse, that could be a very effective way to get a job. Or simply show up somewhere in the mask.
Nice job, and awesome project.
