world's craziest golf courses

world's craziest golf courses

not all golf courses need to be green or 18 holes or even safe for that matter.
here is a look at some of the world's craziest golf courses for those who are looking for
an adventure the next time they tee off.

located in southern australia, the nullarbor links course is the world's longest golf course,
with an 18-hole par 72 course which spans 1,365 kilometers. it crosses over two time zones
with holes in each participating town or roadhouse along the eyre highway.

uummannaq is the coldest golf course in the world.
located in greenland, north of the arctic circle, it is set on large glacial icebergs with rounds
played in temperatures which can fall to -50 degrees with wind-chill factor.
the course is shorter than a typical course, with larger holes and the game is played with
a fluorescent ball so that it can be seen on the expanse of white.

the lost city golf course in sun city, south africa is considered to have the 'unluckiest' hole.
the 13th hole is home to 38 hungry crocodiles, so if your ball ends up in the water,
don't expect to get it back.

a strange image for a golf course - a small square of turf vs. an expanse of sand and stone at opal fields golf club

'more bunker than green', this green isn't so green. the opal fields golf club north of
adelaide, australia is surrounded by red desert, sandstone rock formations and massive cattle stations.
it is essentially, one huge sand trap, something which is typically avoided on a normal golf course.
grass needs to be oiled with grease to prevent dirt from being blown away by desert winds.

the world's 'hottest' green is the merapi golf club in indonesia.
it is situated right next to an active volcano, however there are no lava hazards included in its design.

the high greens at the gulmarg, india

established by british residents in 1904, the government golf course in gulmarg, india
stands at 8,500 feet. the air is thinner because of the high altitude, which means the ball will
travel further, increasing the distance of one's drive.

Kantarat Golf Course in Bangkok.
Tucked in between the runways of Bangkok's Don Muang airport.

From TIMEasia Magazine 2007

At Thailand's Kantarat Golf Course, step onto the tee, take in the view on the first hole, and it soon becomes clear that this will be a round to remember. Off to the right is a sign laying down the club's idiosyncratic rules to visitors: no photo taking, no weapons. Then, wait a minute or so and watch as a Boeing 747 comes in to land, with a roar and a screech, on the runway next to the fairway. Of course, such a distraction will wreak havoc with your game. But then, when it comes to playing Kantarat—located inside the grounds of Bangkok's Don Muang international airport—it's not really about the game.

Owned by the Royal Thai Air Force, the 18-hole course is sandwiched between the airport's two parallel runways. There's nothing fancy about the greens and fairways (or the price, at just a round). But the attraction of Kantarat—whose entrance is 1.5 kilometers from the international terminal—is the marvelous sensation of teeing off within a decent drive's distance of a landing 747 and not getting arrested for doing so. Or the thrill of having to walk across a busy taxiway to reach the back nine (remember: hold onto your hat—those Rolls-Royce jet engines blow quite a gale). Afterward, you can retreat to the clubhouse for a cool shower, followed by an excellent Thai meal in the air-conditioned café. Sure, Kantarat is no St. Andrews, but as far as killing transit time goes, it's a hole-in-one.
