henrik amberla: 'parking in rainbows' - think outside the parking box competition shortlisted revealed

'parking in rainbows' by henrik amberla from finland, is one of the 66 shortlisted entries
from our recent designboom competition 'think outside the parking box' in collaboration
with nissan.

large parking lots are often a mess. we get lost amongst rows upon rows of cars.
parking in rainbows makes the parking experience itself more enjoyable. parking spots are
arranged in a semi-circular formation, with each row categorized by car color, resulting in a
rainbow of vehicles. suitable for malls, fair grounds and trade fairs but excellent for towers,
allowing visitors to view their achievements from above.

the jury has almost finished making their selections and results of the competition will be
published soon.

wow fantastic idea!
reynan Shimada   10.28.09
How would I find my blue car among other blue cars?
will   10.28.09
artistic? yes. practical? no.
good design? hm...
surely thinking outside the box
alex   10.28.09
...and where is suposed to park your vehicle if your car color parking is full and any other color is empty?

design is about resolving problems, not creating diferent ones!

anyway, nice poetry
anto mg   10.28.09
y para que sirve eso?
netjer   10.28.09
pretty lame that this was shortlisted.
dropkick   10.28.09
the designer assumes car colors are equally distributed when in reality the most common colors are actually shades (white, silver, black) followed by red.

also, in regards to the image- I have never seen purple or pink cars.
hober   10.28.09
hmm. Where my car???)))
max_rocket   10.28.09
super cool! lov it
jamba says   10.28.09
where does the silver qashqai in the image suppose to park?!! like said already, lovely idea, but not practical.xx
the markitect   10.28.09
pretty lame.
reddyset   10.28.09
Oh, brother. This is what we call a "first year idea". Quaint, looks nice on paper and will NEVER work in the real world.
KDS   10.29.09
excellent use of space. Almost 1/3 the number of cars that would have fit there in an ugly old-fashioned parking lot!
Mike   10.29.09
Bad bad idea. Not practical at all. If you can't make things better, you should leave them as they are. Don't change for the sake of changing it.
Mohit Doda   10.29.09
Good idea!!!
max_rocket   10.29.09
come on guys its thinking outside the box and this is, it is not supposed to solve lifes parking problems, just getting people to think differently and importantly, positively. Positivity what a marvellous thing, rainbows are positive, nice work.
bird   10.29.09
ha! most of cars are grey... ha ha ha
estoico   10.29.09
What a great idea. Most large buildings and shopping centres have more than one car park anyway, so making this entirely practical. If you sectioned a part of a mall's parking lot it could even draw people who wanted to take part. Well done
cpidey   10.30.09
lame, lame, lame.. come on people! you're so negative!
it was an interesting entry! of course it won't "save the world" but that was not the purpose and if you want it could have more grey lanes! can't you go beyond the technical details a see the beauty of the concept?
rainbow   10.30.09
some people are really creative, while others are just plain complaining and boring...there are always other ways to live life (or park your car in this case)
rainbowbrite   10.30.09
Colour is always good. I like this!
Alya   10.30.09
yeah you really should ignore the pracitcal side of this idea and just see how creativ it is.

let it be a nice utopia ;)
saftladenqueen   11.01.09
passengers and drivers never see the rainbow only the apartment residents and god!! jury members, i adore your point of view !!
