mario lemos: trace - think outside the parking box competition shortlisted revealed

'trace' by mario lemos from switzerland, is one of the 66 shortlisted entries from our
from our recent designboom competition 'think outside the parking box' in collaboration
with nissan.

the concept of the parking project is based on the functionality of sundials which indicates
the time according to the position of the sun. trace uses the same system to delineate a
parking space through the use of aluminum poles. meant for parking spaces in sunny places,
the poles are oriented in the direction of sunrise and sunset(wet-east), that reduces or enlarges
the parking space according to time. on sunny days this concept is purely graphical.
the simplicity of the poles become a sculpture, a work of art in a desolate place such as an
urban parking lot. at night, the shadows of the posts are lost in space.

This doesn't work!
Goncalo Melo de Oliveira   11.01.09
This would only work in a desert on the equator!
Alex   11.01.09
stupid
mdl   11.01.09
Interesting idea, but we must bare in mind that the sun rises and sets exactly in east and west only in some areas and for a very short periods of time. So shadows won't be as intended. At rise and se they will be very elongated and remain that way for minutes, before shifting aside and get shorter. Parking will be possible only until the shadows keep some reasonable distance between each other - for how long? Idea is good though.

Not at all !!!
bibits   11.01.09
esta muito fixe... bom trabalho... e não ligues a alguns comentários isso é só inveja...Gostei
Octávio Lemos   11.01.09
I love it! not that it would work like this, but fantasise about how a parkinglot would look like after a day when the sun has passed over the parking... cars in every direction, all over the place, total chaos. Love it!
Niclas   11.01.09
OKOK, I think this is even worse than the other two which have been revealed.
gullup   11.01.09
i agree with niclas

Is Unworking and Unpractic
Rangel   11.02.09
I think this is brilliant and hilarious! Midnight parking made blind.
henrik   11.02.09
poetic.. but unpractic..you can't find a correct position for your car, the single pole in not sufficient and shadows always move!
michela   11.02.09
isn't this a competition about advertising and art direction? Surely it doesn't actually need to function or make sense - like the advert where the car is made out of cake - this is a nice concept for an advert
post-it   11.02.09
"In search of cutting edge design to challenge conventional urban parking to be tougher and stylish."
Niki   11.02.09
Not sense at all.. Nice art concept but honestly this will never work in real life...
It's supposed to be part of the problem or part of the solution??
luis   11.02.09
It's a brilliant idea...I see that it is much more iconic of sustainable awareness. It needs work/research on the functionality side. It can creates chaos if used in high masses parking lots. I'd rather see it empployed in a modern urban sustainable kind a retail setting.
Rania Masri, LEED AP   11.02.09
i think is better use a solar panel and star thinking again in thinking autside the parking box
dub23   11.02.09
OK! i got it !!!!
your design is about...common sticks on the ground??
ho really cool, how can someone could ever think about that great idea! sticks...yes..i love sticks!

Poor jury, they play with us, and use us for having ideas for free.
d   11.02.09
who short listed this man !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
asreddy   11.02.09
Come on, use your brain when it still functional!
Aska   11.03.09
So we get chaotic, inefficient parking arrangements over the course of a day, abject uselessness in the evening. Not to mention that the rampancy of incapable drivers would ensure that damage to cars and poles alike would abound.

Completely impractical and unreasoned. The sort of thing that should be dismissed from the mind shortly after conception, rather than being fleshed out with illustrations and >gasp!< being shortlisted in a contest. Barely qualifies as clever, which would have been its only potential saving grace.
pannonica   11.03.09
Has anyone ever seen the state of signs, rails, curbs, etc in parking lots? These poles wouldn't last a second without getting bent, broken, or smashing up and denting cars. I'd appreciated a little bit of function with a cool design
