borrowed bouncy balls?

the video shown above is taken from a 1996 epsidoe of
david letterman's late show. the footage bears an incredible
likeness to the sony bravia ad from 2005 'the one with the bouncy balls'
as does the video below that was made in 2003 for the orignial version
of 'heartbeats' (the song used in the sony ad). could it be that the song
generates the same imagery in the heads of all those who hear it?
co-incidence? or simply that the ad was in the end nothing new?

EVERYTHING has been done before...

sophie's right. no creation ex nihilo. advertising people often re-cycle ideas they don't have. that said, there's no one to blame, that's just a part of the process.

not everything has been done before but yeah off course those advertising people notice cool things what happend before and refresh it. and make it better.
but what a coincidence the video of heartbeats includes downhill skateboarding kids and also those intensive coloured objects

The one thing I've always referenced is that, at Reed College in Portland, Oregon, for their big annual graduation fest, Renn Fayre, they've been doing a bouncy ball drop of more than 10,000 balls in the middle of the night during the fest, for easily more than a decade. So if Sony stole this from Letterman, Letterman stole it from Reed College.

what's most interesting about this whole fuss is that
everyone knows that ad agencies copy stuff and all that
racket... but do you really think that all this new discussion
is for real? -not at all it wouldn't surprise me if the folks
behind the ad (fallon) have something to do with all this
cynic   11.30.06
its weird that there is so much intertextuality
-it can't be coincidence - can it?
what's the obsession with copying on this blog?
i like it! ha ha!

Have you ever found a very new one these days?

Although the David Letterman idea is the same as in the sony ad, it's very porrly executed, and it is done in a comedy way, they clearly didn't realise how beautiful dropping bouncy balls off the top of a hill could be. Plus, do we even though if the guy who made the ad ever saw that Letterman show...people seem obsessed with things being ripped off nowadays, but sometimes people just have similar ideas...it's been happening throughout history. Regarding the heartbeat video, i see no similarities there other than the song...i mean...it's skateboarders going down the hill! not balls! should directors or creatives who want to produce original ads/films rule out hills in general from now on?
