radioball

radioball

rather than design a standard flat radio, teague set out to create a round radio that can change stations
by rolling around. the concept was developed by benoit collette and adam kumpf and encourages
discovery through spatial interaction. the radio takes cues from analog radios of the past, opting for
a more mechanical dial over an LED screen. users simply roll the radio around on a flat surface and
stumble upon different stations. if the find one they like they can add a small marker to the exterior
structure of the ball to remember the position. while the radioball is just a concept the prototype is
licensed under creative commons.

excellent idea! great interation of simple technology and creativity!

This is making me remember a glimpse of a similar idea in the 1960s in which the stations were preset on the "i like" tiles. Instead of "i like" it was 1400 or 1610, etc. It was just AM, not FM. It was crude, really just flat turned round. The idea never caught on, maybe this will. Heres the thing, maybe in the 1960s people werent ready to give up a dial and considered this a meaningless toy. But thats exactly the point, if the most simple and efficient way of getting a station is by a readable dial, why bother trying to improve the mousetrap? Though I like this idea and wish the designers well, im not sure they have improved anything.
