node school desk

node school desk

IDEO and steelcase teamed up to design node, a school desk that combines storage, a chair and a writing
surface all in one mobile unit.  the concept was recently exhibited at the neocon trade show in chicago
and is designed to support new forms of learning. research showed that many teachers are using multiple
modes of teaching to help students with different learning styles. despite this shift, most student
furnishings are still designed for a single mode. node allows students to easily shift from one teaching
mode to another using a single piece of furniture. the seat is mounted on a rolling platform that has
storage for their belongs underneath and a large writing surface with a hook for hanging a bag.
the seat is a single shell and the table is large enough for writing and laptop use.

Good Design.

Great design.

It would be great if the bar which the table is attached to would be horizontally extendable. This way it looks like it's only suitable for skinny kids. The width of the bowl-like chair seat could be a problem too for bigger students.

I like it. Two things: One, adjustable table, both in height and angle and two, depending on the flex of the seat, or whether the seat is spring-loaded, so that one can lean back on the seat d;-)

really clever and nicely done design, IDEO and steelcase! of course!

Note right-hand bias. The familiar chair-desk designs of the 1950s were only made for righties -- righties with "correct" handwriting style. Badly cramped left-handed learners. Also, the castor mounting invites unintended mobility, especially from squirmy or mischievous or misbehaving kids. Good for adult education and committee meetings though.

Change of materials, improved ergonomics.. but the design is the same..

we were brought one of these into my firm about a month ago. believe it or not, EVERYONE, big and small, fit comfortably. they do make ones for the left hand, i think, you just have to specify to have one of those for each classroom. the castors are intentional for collaborative learning, and let's face it, kids will always find ways to squirm about in their chairs. i am honestly finding ways to cut down on the architecture expenses so the students of the community college we are working on can have these chairs!

Cool! I wish I could try them.
