volkswagen bik.e
volkswagen bik.e

earlier this year, volkswagen unveiled a small battery powered electric bike that is designed to fit into the
spare tire compartment of a car. known as the bik.e, this vehicle was first debuted at auto china 2010 and
folds into a compact circle ideal for storing away. the bike has no pedals and travels a distance of 20km
with a top speed of 20 km/h. rather than a daily commuting vehicle, volkswagen envisions the bik.e as
a supplement to a car, helping users get to their destination. the bike fits neatly into the spare tire space
in a car and can even be charged in this position by the car’s DC current, in addition to a regular plug.

I generally like what VW has come up with, here, but I kind of question the rationale behind it? It seems a lot like Honda's City + Motocompo combo from the early eighties, updated with new technology. I suspect the uses for this bike, as VW suggests, would be limited. It wouldn't stay in my trunk very long.
As energy-consuming transportation devices go, though, it is tough to beat a small 2-wheeler.

that is a terrific concept!

I would swap my spare tyre for this every day of the week. Actually, i would buy a VW if i got one of these in the boot. Especially if you break down and can zoom off to the nearest help point, amazing.

Does the lack of pedals make it a motor vehicle? If so would it then require registration, tax, helmet etc...

i think VW car is good supplement to this bike

so i have to take out all the crap out of the boot to get access to the spare tire compartment? not very convenient....
btw: bike is as ugly as the model

Pedal is the only problem. I think it need some. Imagine your bike is uncharge and you have a car problem. How can you use the bik-e? I know that smart ingeneer have think about this issue! But they will stick to their concept.

Wow! beautifull design!

yo quiero!

So where do you put the spare tire then, in the garage next to the other bicycles?
What i think is that while its a great idea, its better as a stand alone electric bike and hopefully it gets used frequently. Better yet, use a real bicycle and burn calories!
