bending bike

design student kevin scott designed this unusual bending bike that not only folds up tightly but can be
used to locks itself up. the de montfort university industrial design student designed the bike to make its
safer and easier to lock up your bike in the city. his design looks like a normal bike when in riding mode,
but a simple level on the frame triggers the frame to go from rigid to pliable. a ratchet system built into
the frame enables the bike to simple be bent around a pole fitting one side of the handle bar into a closure
under the seat, locking the bike in place. the design just won runner-up for the business design centre new
designer of the year award at new designers. scott will be using his prize money to further develop the
bike, building more iterations for a full testing of its viability.

The guy got a great idea, and a well done implementation, maybe good for city bikes who don´t need be very hard.

yes, great idea but why pivot the front wheel forks in the stem; surely turning the handlebars could release some of the tension in the cable and allow the whole frame to bend to go round corners. slinky.

this appears to have been attached to a lamppost or street sign. this is not legal and the local authority could remove it. i would like to see it attached to regular cycle racks as i dont think it will work. i have seen a simpler design where the main frame unlocks, so if it has an attempted theft the bike cannot be ridden. this looks crap in comparisson.

@L Armstrong - It's OK to tie your steed up against lamp post or street sign in my city. Sounds like a petty law to me, you should try to get it changed.
The design is a fresh idea, although I think I would still be inclined to stick with a lock and cable,

The shoes come with the bike?

and how will he stop it?
WHERE ARE THE BRAKES?
adama1492   07.09.10
like the part to think different, but fear the crash test ;)
Till   07.09.10
there are no brake or shifter wires since because this is a fixed gear bike.

This is not great design, its the usual trying to improve a relativly simple design (the bike) - in my city we have many designs of bike stands all of which this design feature would be usless. When wrapped around a pole this bike will also just lay on the floor (not on it's tyres) which i would not be too happy to do). Then there is the cost of the bike, surely this bike would cost more than just buying a lock, which is more versatile and lighter.

the chimp said it all.
mr   07.10.10
@chimp - if you live in your city no prob, but there are countries like mine in which bike stands are inexistent
mariob   07.10.10
Very creative , love it !
Dude   07.10.10
can he bend it against a pole while riding it?
gabrel   07.10.10
i will never lose my bike, but i will lose my life......
nigriv   07.12.10
great...but how do you lock it after you bent it around the pole?
a.d.k.v   07.15.10
fun!

@"big poop while writing this": have you ever seen a fixed gear bike with a (i think it's shimano deore) free hub? the 8/9 speed freewheel on the photo is being equipped with one single sprocket - using spacers and a chain tensioner. the freewheel shown on the photos might present difficulties in fixed skidding.
k_k   07.16.10
not sure if the frame is stiff enough for city riding.
