‘airscouter’

recently renamed from ‘retinal imaging display’ to ‘airscouter’, this head mounted unit by japanese company brother allows users to view augmented images without affecting their visual field thanks to its transparent display. private images and confidential data can accessed anywhere. while the technology is small and lightweight, users can look at content on a virtual large screen anytime and anywhere (16 square inch screen viewed at 1m ahead).

updated from 2009, this prototype shows images more clearly with its redesigned optical scanning system. additionally, this upgraded design offers the option of attaching a micro camera to the eye piece.

‘aircouter’ consists of three modules: a light source module, an optical scanning module, and an eyepiece module. this prototype uses an optical micro electro mechanical system (MEMS) scanner to reduce the size and weight to less than one thousandth of the previous prototype.

‘airscouter’ will be showcased at brother world japan 2010 expo during september in tokyo. according the brother, the device is set to launch in the fiscal period of 2010.
