space-efficient vehicle
space-efficient vehicle

the compact three-seater named the space-efficient vehicle is the creation of dutch designer ralph
panhuysen. the concept aims to create a small lightweight vehicle much like many micro cars
created right after the second world war. the design uses three wheels and seats three in
a v-formation. the exterior would be made from environmentally minded recyclable flax-fiber
composite, but the engine isn’t electric of hybrid as one would expect. instead, panhuysen chose
to equip the car with a two cylinder 500cc gas engine at, that would be very efficient thanks to
the car’s lightweight and aerodynamic design. the designer estimates the design would average
around 80 mpg.

design-aerobics: tech gadgets course (september 16th - november 16th)
next month designboom will hold an online design course on the topic of 'tech gadgets'.
we'll be looking at the design process of popular technological objects,
the ways they have evolved and pondering as to what might be around the corner.
more information on how to enroll and a lesson list can be found here.
Pretty slick, I really like the tricycle configuration. I don't know which I like better : this or the VW 1-liter concept.

Would be really nice if it didn't have a gas engine.

...too bad the designer didn't credit the originator of the concept: Buckminster Fuller... The Dymaxion Car
Dennis 08.22.10
@ Dennis - You could fit five of these inside a Dymaxion. The only thing they have in common is the trike wheels. If you'd bothered to hit up the website, you'd see that it's an homage to the old Isetta and Messershmidt.
As cool as the Dymaxion is/was, it's an energy gobbling SUV compared to this.
@Gabi - The designer has stated that electricity wouldn't be out of the question, but *I* have to question your sentiment.
IMHO, the energy source isn't the cause of environmental degradation, but rather the over-consumption of energy (in any form). Whether this car is powered by fossil-fuel, nuclear electricity, or solar electricity, we are extracting that energy from nature in one form or another. It is the efficient consumption of that energy that is important, not the energy itself.
Based on the designer's notes, I believe that could be a perspective they've embraced, and it certainly carries more weight with me than some misplaced anti un-environment sentiment.
The only real environmental alternative is pedals, but I suspect this design is too large for that.
