apple iPad 2

apple's iPad 2 will be available beginning 11 march in the united states

apple's official release of the iPad 2 comes just a week prior to the availability of the devices in the united states.

at 8.8mm wide, the iPad 2 is 33% thinner than its predecessor and thinner than even the iPhone.
featuring the same size 9.7 inch LED-backlit screen, the device is also 15% lighter than the original iPad, weighing in at 1.2 pounds.

powered by a new dual-core A5 processor that doubles the average processing speed,
the tablet features a front-facing VGA camera and rear camera with 720px HD video capacity.
updated software supports additional features that include a built-in gyroscope for added functionality in apps and gaming,
and 'HDMI video mirroring' that lets users display their iPad screen on an HDTV.

the models will be available in black and white

with the announcement, apple also released the iPad 2 smart cover. available in a range of polyurethane colours and leather models,
the device easily snaps onto an iPad through a magnetic hinge, automatically waking the iPad 2 when opened
and putting it to sleep when closed. an internal microfiber lining keeps the screen safe,
while the cover itself can fold along two joints to function as a stand.

the wi-fi enabled iPad 2 will be available in the united states on 11 march,
with a retail price starting at 499 USD for the 16GB model
and 629 USD for the 3G-ready 16GB version.

the devices will be released to canada, mexico, and much of europe on 25 march,
with availability in other countries yet to be announced.

it almost seems Apple leave problems in their devices just to sell the next generation.

I want one!!!

@MB agreed. there's always something missing that is a "must have" item for the next generation. i find it kind of ridiculous, and i feel it hinders progress when a company holds back certain features for future releases instead of searching for new, innovative features yet to be thought of.

I think it's great! I want one too, since I didn't bother with the first one. I love that it's supposed to be even thinner than the iPhone and faster! All I know is when I get my hands on one first thing I'm going to do is download the TV Everywhere app with DISH Network and with the help of the Sling Adapter (that I got from my job DISH) have all live and recorded TV access through it. Yay! I can't wait! :)

except for the cover, which is rather well designed imo, it's no real shocker... more like the version they should have made instead of the ipad 1!

The lifetime of the ipad1 couldn't have been shorter. Well done Apple for this new ipad2 ! It lets the ipad1 becoming completely obsolete only in a few months...
A really good example of "planned obsolescence", isn't it? Let see now, how long ipad2 will last...

MB - yes of course they do, they always have.
I want one though.

fanny: what did you expect? lifetime of iPhones and iPods is 1 year, Macs 8 months. I think noone expected iPad 1 to last longer than until now. On the other hand, the upgrade is not that dramatic, so if you've bought the first one, it will last you until iPad 3. The android for tablets is here and apple had to reveal something upgraded. On the other hand, they could have just upgraded the "inside". Take the thinner body as a bonus.

Yes I missed the camera too, but they knew the "real iPad 2" (the third) will come in two years and they had to postpone it. yes it is not a great thing to do ,but you don't have to buy one if you really need that camera that much. I really don't understand complaints. If you like and need the device, buy it. If you don't like it, then don't, or wait one year. Yes, I love iPad, but not that much as saving 500 bucks for something else more needed (macbook f.i.).

You have two options: upgrade the device every year or the copycats are gonna kill you. Of course, apple PR will say, this iPad 2 is completely new and blahblah...whell don't trust them, it's just 1.5 . iPad 3 will feature retina display, maybe thunderbolt etc... If you have iPad 1, it's gonna be worth to have it for next 3 years, if you're not a total geek. I'm having next iPhone, just because my contract ends. I love my 3gs and even though I know 4 is much better, 3gs is enough for me and if it would be made out of better materials, it would be great for newt 5 years.

don't let them fool you by PR
