PEGA: paper polypropylene alloy

PEGA: paper polypropylene alloy

a laptop computer frame formed with the paper pp alloy in a standard injection mold

taipei and shanghai based consultant agency PEGA design & engineering's new structural material concept
is on display at milan design week 2011. the material is a recycled paper and polypropylene plastics based alloy
that is attractive to the senses, environmentally friendly and uses the same injection mold machine and process as
standard ABS plastic products. the paper PP alloy also has the same high strength and elasticity as ABS, but is a
cost effective, available, recyclable and reusable, even biodegradable, alternative.

I'm intrigued to know how the polypropylene component of this material biodegrades?

magic.
ocelot   04.08.11
how long is the material biodegradable?

polypropylene is not sustainable at all!
Jelmer   04.08.11
is the polypropylene recycled as well? it's not exactly clear... cheers

OK the biodegradable sounds irritating at first …… 10 secs of research shows that this might be achieved through an additive that allows the PP to brake down in a microbe rich environment (called composting), I think I heard though that community compost collectors dont really like to have bio plastics in their bins. Further people don't seem to have much basic plastics chemistry knowledge … I was taught in school that PP and PE burnt at the right temperature only produces H2O, thats high school chemistry. Shurely its a hell lot more sustainable than ABS and eventually if it ends up in that gigantic plastic Islands floating our Oceans it at least wont be there for eternity… Maybe etter than nothing, shure its still stupid to use petrol but eventually thats better than burning down the rainforests for producing Soy to produce "Bio" Fuels / Bioplastics. Not even mentioning the problematics about burning food, when the bigger part of humanity doesnt have enough to eat. End the E10 Biofuel Madness

polypropylene may now be produced from methanol. i don't know how much energy it takes to do this.

The push for "lightweighting" and recyclability is understandable, but let's get terminology right, too. This material is a composite (blend of fibers and amorphous polymer), not a (metallic) alloy.

when is people going to realize that even carrots dont biodegrade in a landfill
