the ‘pentax q’ interchangeable lens camera

the recently released ‘pentax q‘ interchangeable lens camera is currently the world’s smallest and lightest, offering the advantages of special lens and manual camera settings with the convenience of highly portability.

the camera measures 3.9 x 2.3 x 1.2 -inches (9.9 x 5.8 x 3.0 cm), weighing about 7.1 ounces (201.3g) and featuring a 3.0-inch colour LCD monitor. its backlit 12.4 megapixel CMOS image sensor is reduced down to 1/2.3-inches in order to keep the camera body small. although the small size impacts the camera’s focal range, a built-in bokeh-control filter aids in counteracting these limitations, widening the depth of field and offering user control over the setting via in-camera filters. the sensor is designed to optimize low-light sensitivity, reducing noise, while a high dynamic range function enhances photos. shake reduction and a vibrational dust removal system round out the camera’s built-in facility features.

featuring a built-in popup flash, the ‘q’ can record full-HD video at a frame rate of 30fps, onto which all lenses and smart effects modes can be applied. burst shooting offers up to five images per second, and the camera offers a shutter speed range of 1/2000 to 30 seconds. shooting modes include metered, aperture/shutter priority, automatic, and twenty-one scene options, as well as creative and ‘smart effect’ options such as ‘watercolour’, the contrast-boosting ‘vibrant colour enhance’, or ‘cross-processing’. four smart effect modes can be assigned to the ‘quick dial’ on the front of the camera.

while the ‘q’ is not backwards compatible with other pentax lenses, four new lenses released simultaneously with the camera include a standard midrange zoom lens (27.5 – 84.0mm equivalent), a 160° fish-eye, and toy lens wide and toy lens telephoto lenses (capturing the equivalent of 35mm and 100mm in 35mm format, respectively).

set to be first released in japan, the ‘pentax q’ is produced in black and white, and will be available in the united states in early fall 2011 at a kit price of 800 USD.
