created by motorola, the ‘moto actv’ is a combination fitness tracker, music player, and communications device, running android behind a waterproof and scratch resistant 1.6-inch colour touchscreen mountable as a watch or armband.

the device measures 1.8 inches (46mm) square by less than 0.4 inches (9.6mm) thick, weighing 1.2 ounces (35 grams). built-in accusense technology records one’s time, distance, speed, and calories burned, while an accelerometer and GPS track the user’s location. in addition, two models of motorola ‘sports headphones’ integrate a heart rate monitor.

if desired, the data is synced automatically to the ‘moto actv web portal‘ training system, which creates charts, tools, and programs to analyze and plan workouts.

the device’s ‘smart music player’, in addition to functioning as a normal music device for up to 4000 songs and featuring FM radio, determines over time which songs produce the highest performance in the user, and creates energizing playlists based on the results. alternatively, an ‘audio coach’ can announce updates on one’s pace during  workout.

‘moto actv’ syncs wirelessly to android smartphones to receive text and calls, or to compatible stereos for music playing.

already available for preorder, the ‘moto actv’ is released in the USA november 6th, 2011, coinciding with the new york marathon, for the suggested cost of 250 USD for 8G of memory and 300 USD for 16G. the device will be made available to europe and latin america in early 2012.
