tokyo motor show - honda micro commuter city car

'micro commuter' concept by honda

honda's 'micro commuter' concept car, on exhibition at the tokyo motor show 2011, is a three-seater urban electric vehicle
designed technologically to satisfy the needs of city drivers and aesthetically to offer increased customizability.

the vehicle measures 8 feet long by 4.1 feet wide and 4.6 feet tall (2.5 x 1.25 x 1.4 meters LWH), slightly shorter
than a smart fortwo. it is powered by a 16.7 kW electric motor with 3.3 kWh lithium-ion battery, offering a maximum
speed of about 37mph (60km/h) and a range of approximately 37 miles (60km). a full battery charge is attained
in under an hour with a standard 200-volt electrical outlet.

inside, the driver is centered in front of the dashboard console, where a steering wheel has been replaced by twin
joystick-like levers. additionally, various car functions can be accessed and monitored remotely via smartphone application.

a loop battery mounted in the car's rear is charged via regenerative breaking, powering the vehicle's onboard systems.
the device can also be removed and used separately to power personal electronics. the 'micro commuter' is also designed
to integrate seamlessly with honda's 'motor compo' concept: keep posted to designboom where tomorrow you can learn
more about this electric bike!

we have 2 million budget left over. great, let`s design a fancy electric car with bluetooth engine, usb windows, drive by firewire and lithium wheels. cool, but what about customization? great idea, we glue some wallpaper on the doors.

Pimped out high tech matchbox?
How about machining some real parts that look and feel like honest materials ... not photoshoped molded plastic toys. This looks like a pvc toy that should sell by the cash wrap at a Disney store. And by now manufactures should be integrating technology, what is with the usb wart picture? hide that please! better it's inside a console so there is a secure place to put your hi tech goodie.

unfortunate because the overall massing is not bad.

How is this a 3-seater for anybody but an adult and two kids? and why two joysticks? The Smart is designed to minimize occupant injury from impacts; this looks about as impact-absorbing as a laundry cart.

I'm glad all roads in Japan are smooth as a F1 track. Those covered wheels wouldn't last a minute in Buenos Aires.

Where were all of you during the R4 competition? harsh criticism for Honda but I think that one thing that needs to be realized is that whatever happens at the Tokyo show is intended to provoke thought not to necessarily create the future. The auto indusytry is quite conservative precisely because consummers are just concentrated on ultra-regulated appliances. I feel this is a breath of fresh air in a world of sameness!
