generative music mosaics from album cover art

developed by ian mckellar, 'musaic' generates mosaics of album art, where each tile is another record cover

'musaic', developed by australia-born, US-based software engineer ian mckellar, offers a visual way to explore music,
compositing together album art from hundreds of other cover images. clicking on one of the 'tiles' opens a large version
of that cover image, as well as sets the page to generate a mosaic of that cover artwork next.

to source the images, the project uses the opensource API of rdio online music streamers. 'musaic' was developed during
music hack day san francisco 2012, a developers' event towards the use of programming to reshape the future of music.
programmed over the course of the 24-hour workshop, the application is not designed as a finished project, but viewers can explore
the album art generator in its current state online.

gee, how innovative

@dbkii, ummmm yes, actually?
as art, no of course not. but that's not what we're talking about.
this is what this guy did in 24 hours. imagine from there instead of just clicking to see album covers you could click and see the album cover and also listen to the artists music. interfaced with rdio api--which it is already--it wouldn't be so hard. maybe on top of that you can connect to similar artists and the like the same way you can with other services, but this interface aspect would mean an alternative visual way of exploring music. and maybe from there, kind of like what the music genome project was trying with sound, you could access some kind of Cover Art Genome information, that might actually have some surprisingly interesting things to say about connections among artists.

ok, i'm dreaming up a little bit here, but none of what i've mentioned is technologically hard to do. provided that naysayers like yourself don't nip this guy's or any other developer's enthusiasm in the bud out of your ignorance.
