nokia 808 phone features 41megapixel camera

the '808' smartphone by nokia features a 41-megapixel camera and zeiss lens

presented at mobile world congress 2012, the 'nokia 808' smart phone features nokia's in-house 'pureview' imaging technology,
packing a 41-megapixel camera sensor and carl zeiss lens to provide lossless digital zoom and high-resolution images and video.

while fully capable of taking 38-megapixel images at 7728 x 5354 pixels, the phone's camera is primarily designed to use
its high resolution to oversample photographs, generating extremely clear 5 to 8 megapixel images by 'combining' pixels.
for example, to produce a 5-megapixel photo, the camera transforms every block of seven pixels in the raw image into just one.
a technique already in use in consumer electronics, the design aims to overcome the inability of fitting optical zoom lenses to a camera,
by effectively providing a 3x digital zoom with no loss in image quality. the device also takes full HD video at 30fps,
which in fact permits 4x digital zoom (rather than the 3x for stills) since the film resolution is 1920 x 1080 pixels.

the 'nokia 808' also features a xenon flash and LED video light. the device is the first smartphone to feature dolby headhpones
audio technology, capable of transmitting stereo sound when the device is connected to stereo headphones.

in addition, a range of specialty 'pureview' apps simplify the process of uploading images and video to vimeo,
sharing them with friends, or obtaining feedback. the phone is NFC-ready and can connect to HD TVs via HDMI
or wireless streaming. the 'nokia 808' suggests that the manufacturers are taking steps towards fulfilling the 2010
predication of general manager anssi vanjoki, who controversially stated that camera phone technology would
'in the very near future' eliminate the need for DSLR cameras.

Unbelievable! Have we reached that already??? Not more then 6 years ago, Nokia was the uncontested leader in the cellphone sector! June 2007 Apple launched a product way over the cellphone concept - they created a life style - sending Nokia down the ladder! Now ... Maybe this is Nokia's attempt to get back in the race, we'll definetely see an improvement in their sales and all the photo enthusiasts won't rest until they get their hands on this!!

someone need to explain nokia that, producing a cellphone with a totally useless 41 megapixel camera is not the point. for a cellphone max. 10 megapixel camera is enough, any real photographer will use this phone to create great master pieces, it just provides to have a high quality facebook profile photo. so is it necessary, i think not.

I completely agree with Emre. Having a 41 mp camera on your phone (just writing this sentence sounds absurd, doesn't it?) doesn't mean you are a photographer. At all.
This powerful gadgets that pretend to make our life "easier" and "faster" are actually making it more empty and more stupid. Everything connected to this, all this "apps", iCrap, and social rubbish, are just a shortcut to stupidity. And it seems like everyone wants to take it at full speed.

"eliminate the need for DSLR cameras" ... please !!! Don't say that, it's complete nosense !

I have to start by saying that in my experience you cannot beat the quality of a DSLR camera and a good lens (yet).

However I am often out-doors, hiking or mountain biking. There are always opportunities for some really good photos but having to worry about a DSLR camera is not that much fun when riding around on rough terrain. Yet I would find it really handy to have a good quality camera in my pocket and at the same time it is a phone. That said I believe there are many other non-pro photographers feeling the same.

Pretty neat I think.

I agree with onceuponatandem on the social rubbish though.

Do people who argue for dslr mean that the kit is more important than the actual image? The more the quality difference narrows, the less high end kit matters. And the pixel count here is not gratuitous, it\'s a clever trick, oversampling combined with improved optics, to get around the limitations small sensors have (given identical tech the smaller sensor gets less light).

way too cool! 41 mp is just what i needed to check out my ropes and knots while i\'m climbing my dishes pile.
