the ‘vela’ exercise bike concept by lunar

the ‘vela‘ exercise bike, designed by the munich office of design firm lunar, is conceptualized as a more aesthetically pleasing alternative to conventional home gym equipment. the gear and pedals are suspended within the bike’s frame; and two legs merge together to form a thin set of handlebars and seat unit.   light projections surrounding the concept bike are colour-coded to the kind and intensity of exercise, designed to create an immersive training experience.

‘pro gear in the home is out of place,‘ the designers explain. ‘since it lived in the gym, no one has reconsidered the design… so we did.‘ ‘vela’ is currently only a concept, but we at designboom like the studio’s bottom-up design approach to an industry whose conventions are largely based on outdated standards, in this case the manufacture of equipment for exclusively professional gyms, where durability and power are of greater concern that visual aesthetics. lunar is also the firm that partnered to help develop the innovatively designed ‘switch’ energy-efficient lightbulbs showcased at CES 2012.
