‘coco’ is a smartphone case that doubles as a physical game controller for apps

designed by palo alto-based startup milkshake labs, ‘coco’ is a protective case for smartphones that returns tactility to gaming by providing a D-pad (up to eight directions), analog stick, and four face and two shoulder buttons for controlling entertainment apps. at the time of its public announcement, the device supports 31 games, with additions planned through the collaboration with developers and wide access to the ‘coco’ developer’s kit.

‘coco’ is currently produced in four sizes, each compatible with a different phone: the samsung galaxy SIII, iPhone 4/4S, iPod touch, and upcoming iPhone 5. the controller can also be used to control an iPad or other iOS device through apple TV, the system that syncs mobile units to a television set, allowing for large or dual -screenp lay.

unlike existing devices based on the same concept, such as the iCade arcade booth for iPad, ‘coco’ integrates with smartphones through the headphone jack, not wirelessly, enabling it to be used even without bluetooth compatibility, and avoiding the need for an extra battery. an audio output jack built into the bottom of the case lets users plug in headphones or speakers.

milkshake labs is currently seeking funding for the project on kickstarter, where devices are available for preorder at 42-50 USD. with successful funding, ‘coco’ is planned to be available by february 2013 in black and white, as well as a colour of kickstarter backers’ choice.
