japanese company green house co. ltd  has developed the ‘GH-LED10WBW LED lantern’ a lighting system which is powered by 350 cc of salt water (3-5% salinity, or 16 grams of salt) instead of electricity of or the use of batteries. outfitted with 10 LED lights, the lamp offers up to 8 hours of light on a single charge of salt water, with 55 lumen brightness. the salinated water works as an electrolyte in combination with two electrodes, a magnesium rod (-) and a carbon rod (+) and can provide up to 120 hours of power before the magnesium rod needs to be replaced. the portable light weighs just 680 grams and can also be used to charge USB-powered devices.
