BMW GINA light visionary model concept car

BMW GINA light visionary model concept car

BMW recently revealed the GINA light visionary model concept car, an innovative new exploration in car design.
instead of the traditional steel and plastic body shell, the GINA concept uses a textile fabric starches over a wire
frame. this unique idea allows the car’s skin to change shape, stretching to match the position and curve of the
wire frame. this idea is demonstrated in the ‘blinking’; headlights and the flexibility of the car doors as they open.
the project began by questioning the purpose of a car’s body and exploring new possibilities. chris bangle,
director of design for BMW, discuses the project in the video below. the car is currently on show at the BMW
museum in munich, germany.

what about vandalism? real cars are made for real streets, not for showroom moquette
dan   06.11.08
i can just imagine frank gehry driving round in one of these!
jimbo   06.12.08
I think we should search tooo much for such materials.
Ehsan   06.12.08
what a fag
piet   06.13.08
a great idea and applicable to other areas
Lionel   06.13.08
The flexibility sure does have numerous advantages. In case of a crash, redesigning the wires won't take long.

But yes, what about safety inside the car during crash? And any punk ass on the streets can tear your GINA!
Vknot   06.13.08
I LOVE IT... Not only it opens a way to mix patterns in design, as it shows a different approach, the morphing stuff, eye-blinkin resembling the human eye, the tight fabric design on the doors, very beautiful to look at.

Its a piece to be proud of.
Eugenio Hertz   06.14.08
your all talking about this car being on the streets, to be honist iam sure they wont put this into production,,or mass production it will be like the buagatti veron, very few people have it, and if they do they take care of it, e.g dont crash it, keep it in a garage haha,,but yeah moving on what a stunning design love it...brilliant car love to see in tested on a track :)....also ive been hearing alot of banter about the aerodynamics ,,,like if it goes to fast surly the fabric with ripple nd tear off....well you know iam sure when bmw though oh llets make a car out of fabric that thats the 1st thing they thought of!! lol called tensile strengh keep up!

danny   06.16.08
Well the most important point is what is advantage of making such car. As research its ok but i cant see any benefit from this flexible and adaptive design. If this could be acheived with solid body design rather than some flexible material it would have been better(Transformers). Well ofcourse nano materials can also be used. In case of collision the car should comeback into its origianl shape.
AH   06.16.08
please tell me this is a hmmmmm what do i call it....a joke? what happens when the engine heats up? However i must say there's people out there with a lot of time to make a very impractical car however beautiful it looks!
mac dee   06.16.08
Man i love the viGINA
Guy   06.16.08
Whoever said the fabrick will rip off if the car goes fast is a moron.. You do realize airplanes were covered in fabrick for decades? And this car won't be going as fast as the fastest of those planes.. Your dumb.. Really dumb..
Renegade   06.17.08
Gee, I was going to say something, but you all are too nasty around here.
stroke   06.17.08
Well done BMW. Keep up the good work.
Aboul wiss.   06.17.08
Wow, I didn't know plankton could type. I'm with Stroke on this one.
Nice car by the way. Obviously it's not practical, but if you don't 'push the envelope' now and again, then we'd all still be living in caves... Maybe 'Guy' is!
Tomsk   06.17.08
revolutionary idea .... i apreciate the concept and i think that we'll c a lote of architects that will use such motives in thier futuristic works........ again amazing
F2F   06.17.08

Tomsk   06.18.08
For safety (crash) and security (theft) considerations design concept would not work but internally to create space and ergonomics design concept will be valuable.
dante in sydney australia   06.18.08
yaa but i wish the thing was cold blooded.and what happens when you have to repair a section of it. remove the entire cloth or panel beat and repaint.....oh gosh.
reuben   06.18.08
i say Really,wonderful, it's wonderful
narek   06.18.08
nice concept but useless practicality if they decide to put it into production. what happens if hits a pedestrian? will he/she crumble into the car? or what happens if it hits a lamp post! food for thought
manc   06.18.08
When traveling over 100 km/h, the GINA turns into bubble, because of vacuum over the roof, behind the back and on the sides. Bangle didn't consider that cars move! It's more like designish toaster for beautiful people
cipi   06.18.08
Brilliant! Light weight (low consumption), inexpensive manufacturing costs, and an adaptable form mean this could be the norm in years to come.
Now, why didn't I think of that?
Dino   06.18.08
Brilliant. This will open a lot of new possibilities in the design world.
jmin   06.19.08
Bruce Wayne would say 'Does it come in black?'
robocco   06.19.08
It's just a concept for whoever said "what may it do in the street." do it a new trend and style in design, thus it's very fascinating.
mreza   06.19.08
ahoy! katrina is sure to blow this off. but a sure shot success on secondlife. kudos to chris and his team.
saurav   06.20.08
A vision of beauty and inspiration indeed! Of course not practical, but as mreza said "it's just a concept". First have the vision, then work backwards to the practicality...I thought this was what design was about(?). Anyhow, nice concept! ;)
Lightist   06.23.08
vandalism?? anyone who owns a car like that isnt going to live in a council flat in a bad estate are they. obv going to be kept in a garage at least
beema boy   06.23.08
That is design!!
mrina   06.23.08
anybody here who said "this is impossible when it hits something the person inside it will certainly die" REALLY think that it is TOTALLY made of textiles?!?!

great work, I'm very impressed AND inspired.
julian   06.24.08
Everyone here seems to be missing the point. Moreover, half of the people with a valid point can't even use the proper form of "you're".

This is a concept car. Jaguar makes about 10000 of these a year and never puts them into production. BMW Sponsors designs like this - check out the living art - as a way of looking at other methods of design. We need things like this to be created, as it's attempts to improve what we currently have that will drive us forward.
Andy   06.26.08
Good or bad opinion doesn't matter, I am sure everyone here is inspired by the concept!
Lawrence   06.30.08
im sure girls cant wait for this one, they wont be dressing up their babie dolls, they will be dressing up their gino doll
tim kakaza   06.30.08
Hi
Being an automotive designer I can only say that Vangle its getting back to its roots as an interior and fashion designer not a real car guy.
Besides from all the technical problems it faces the car will not have any real concrete surface statement. It will be a blog of fabric.
The idea its not new its the one used by the couture studios in designing dresses
What a waste of money and talent
Chris please step aside and give a chance for real car designers to design exciting and new cocncept and production cars
M. Riego   07.01.08
wow, design is starting to move again..
that's visionary. beautiful!
hdxd   07.02.08
Só não gostei da porta. O tecido enrugado fico meio esquisito.
Moco   07.03.08
Gina is best...............
lolloo   07.04.08
Great idea to change feature of mobile_forms, even static_forms.
abbas   07.06.08
It was revealed that this car is only a concept car, and has no intention of actually being created.

Kind of sad, really.
UserUnknown   07.08.08
has anyone picked up that in image 5 of where the engine is slightly showing... that it looks like a vagina opening... also that its call a GINA... what are BMW thinking???
jeD   07.09.08
Um, I'm assuming there's a maximum passenger weight allowed. It wouldn't be funny to see a fat ass dragging below the car (or flying out the side when cornering). If it's waterproof, could you drive it into the ocean ? If you had a double shell and filled it with a lighter-tha air substance, could it fly ?
MB_Oz   07.16.08
THATSTS GREAT CAR CONCEPT. I WANT IT NOW! THE FROMT LIGHT SISTEM IS BEAUTIFLE. LIKE BAT AN EYE.BEATIFLE, INCENDIARY,GREAT. WELL DONE BMW!
!!!!APLAUSE!!!!

Lets see what the Stig makes of it!
Schill   07.18.08
I do fancy it, but it's a bit quirky. Why does it have to crinkle?
Snip Stam   07.18.08
Must be very cold in the winter. I hope turning on the heat doesn't melt the thing.

Steve   08.01.08
well done BMW your quite welcome to send one my way. love the work keep implimenting wont you.
kaz   08.04.08
Great!!!!
Ivit   08.06.08
Well done!!! What a beautiful and visionary car. It may as well point the way for future cars, maybe not the material used as a 'real world' car but the design and knowledge gained from it. People that have signed in here have been morons, who says the opening of the cars bonnet looks like a vigina, come on is that really mature?? and other people are completely missing the point and being wet blankets. Anyone want one of those japanese creations called personal mobility machines?? It's called CONCEPTUALISING, get with it people.
