CES 2009: powermat wireless charger

CES 2009: powermat wireless charger

one of the clear trends coming out of this year’s CES is smart design. rather than introduce
a slew of new flashy gadgets, companies are focusing on solving design issues that have
been created by years of poor design. powermat is a revolutionary new design which aims
to help frustrated users charge their army of battery powered devices. however instead of
fumbling with power cords and adaptors, powermat charges your phone, mp3 player and
other gadgets wirelessly. the system works with a non-conductive powermat which syncs
with receivers attached to your devices. powermat eventually hopes that manufacturers
will integrate wireless charging receivers into devices making syncing even easier. the mat
will retail for around 100 USD and the receivers will be around 35 USD when the system is
launched later this year. it will still be awhile until we truly know if this products helps ease
the gadget charging dilemma.

This is very similar to my Braun electrical toothbrush, why Braun did not come with this idea first?

What a fantastic idea this product is. I'll never have to untangle power cords again!
marti573   01.11.09
my 5 year old Braun toothbrush has one of these things. its nothing new and many companies have been trying to do it for years.
it looks really nice, reminds me of Palm Pre's touchstone.
---------------------------------
But I'm wondering how useful this is compared to a regular universal charging station/organizer?
I mean with this product you still have to plug the wireless adapter into your device-you can't pick it up off the pad or it'll stop charging. Even with a regulor universal charging station/organizer you can pick it off of it and make a phone call with it charging-though its corded. And a regular organizer has plugs for your phones pda's ipod's etc via the adapter (just like this wireless pad) and plugs into one outlet. it does the same thing as this wireless one, but for waaaay cheaper and you can still talk on it with it charging!! They're like at walmart with nice woodfinish and felt padding. Or u can get one at like Ross or Marshalls for on sale.
Even if products have the adapters embedded into the device you still can't talk and charge. that's barely wireless, like a wireless home phone but it'll only work 1 inch away from the base. Don't get me wrong I love the touchstone for palm pre and will probably pay extra for it (its an optional accessory) but I don't think this is amazingly revolutional, crazy freakin awesome. It'll save you maybe 0.2 seconds with the adapters already embedded, and no time without the adapters-you'll still have to unplug something-and possibly lose it constantly (especially if you kids lose a whole power cable! wow I'm sorry!)
Bottomline: if you have too many cords just buy a universal charging station/organizer that you can plug everything in to and use only one outlet. It'll save you months of waiting for this thing and probably a 0 less

oh and the adapters on regular charging stations are most times included, and for ones that aren't are only a couple of bucks for a pack of them. The wireless one is 35 bucks for one adapter for one device!? what?! geez if you have 6 items-1 phone, pda, laptop(dont see how you'd charge a laptop with it btw) camera, a DS, and a mp3 player- would cost...35*6 70*3..... 0 just for the adapters.. then 0 for the bad.. uh is more than my mp3 anyways... yeah so a regular universal station for and a in adapters at walmart...compared to 0..uh..no no for me. Still buying the touch stone though for palm pre. it'l be for one thing and cheaper than 0! :)
And if you say no ill just charge one device, 6 is too extreme, then why are you getting this pad in the first place? Still one device adpater and the pad=5.

I can't wait until the Powermat comes on all work desks. It will be great to have a desk that automatically charges all of your gadgets...But until that is a reality I will take two of the mats as soon as they come out in the fall.
PowerPuff   01.12.09
I cannot wait to grab one of my own, the idea is fantastic!
MDS   01.12.09

marie   01.12.09
I totally want one of these, it's like the future is now.
jakep   01.12.09
How does this pad work? you have ur info red, radio frequencies, around the earth. this is great but you would have to be like. a foot away from the pad and have somehting extra on the device(as shown in one of the pictures).
kjlhuiol   01.13.09
This looks so cool...can't wait to see it.
Joytomi   01.16.09
Yes, Bruan has been using this for a couple of years on their electric toothbrushes.

Cool concept, clutter free and most of all, the convenience of compatibility between different products.

One problem though, how will this charge my different products with different voltages and milli-amps rated batteries? Also will this be rapid or trickle charge?
